STEPHEN HENRY JONES was sales director and assistant managing director to Messrs. F. C. Hibberd and Company, Diesel locomotive engineers, of Park Royal, London. He was born in 1897 and was educated at West Bromwich Technical School. In 1914 he was apprenticed to Messrs. Chance Brothers and Company, and served at their works at Smethwick.
After three years he became a draughtsman at Messrs. Avery's works, Birmingham. During 1917-18 Mr. Jones served in the Wireless Section of the R.A.F., thereafter continuing his career as a draughtsman. He joined Messrs. Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds,of Birmingham, as a machine designer in 1920, and subsequently became an assistant to the chief engineer of the firm.
In 1923 he was appointed assistant works manager to the Kent Construction and Engineering Company; he was promoted to be works manager, and he installed a complete plant for the manufacture of metal and wood screws. Five years later he joined Messrs. Hibberd in a similar capacity. He was made works director in 1933, and in 1938 he took over the duties of sales director and assistant managing director.
Mr. Jones, who was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1935, was killed as a result of enemy action at his home in Finchley on 20th November 1940.
