Stanhope Steamship Co

From Graces Guide

9 St. Helen's Place, London, and at Cardiff, Hull, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Glasgow[1]

1934 The Stanhope Steamship Company Limited was registered, with a capital of £4,000, to carry on the business of shipowners and managers. The directors were J. A. Billmeir (permanent governing director) and Annie M. Billmeir.[2]

The company started from small beginnings, with the purchase of two old coastal ships. The Spanish Civil War was credited with transforming the firm's fortunes, as Jack Billmeir ran supplies to the Republican side. Billmeir became a millionaire and was described variously as colourful, with several nicknames: Jolly Jack, and the King of Spain. He died suddenly, while playing golf, in 1963.[3]
