1871 Patent No. 801: Stanhope Perkins, of Gorton, for making and fixing the water space rings round locomotive firedoors, etc., in the manner shown [in a sketch, not included here]. According to this plan, the firehole ring is made of the section shown, it having a lip which protects the edges of the copper firebox plate from the action of the fireman's tools, and it is secured in position by stays, which are screwed into the flanges of the ring rivetted into countersinks formed in the plates of the firebox and casing.[1]
