1841 George Masters Gould is Schoolmaster. With his wife, mother, sister and four children. Two assistants. 30 male pupils resident age 7-13 years.[1]

1851 St. John's Hospital: George Masters Gould is Schoolmaster. With his wife Charlotte and two children and three others. Two servants. 28 male boarding scholars aged 8-13.[2]

1861 St. John's Hospital: George M. Gould is Schoolmaster. One visitor and three servants. 19 male pupils resident aged 9-13. [3]

1871 High Street: John S. Luscombe is Schoolmaster and his wife Louisa is Matron with their three children. One visitor and two servants. 24 male scholars resident aged 8-13.[4]

1881 St. John's Hospital School and Orphanage, 4 High Street: John S. Luscombe is Schoolmaster and his wife Louisa is mistress of institution with their six children. One visitor and two servants. 25 male orphans resident aged 8-13.[5]

1884 Richard Smith appointed headmaster. School had about 90 pupils and a number of Bluecoat boys who were resident scholars.[6]

1889 Richard Smith, Master.[7]

1891 Richard Smith is Schoolmaster. With his wife Emily, four children and his SIL. Two servants and one officer. 21 male orphans aged 8-13.[8]

1901 Richard Smith is Schoolmaster. With his wife Emily, three children and his SIL. Two servants and one officer. 17 male boarders aged 7-12.[9]

1917 Richard Smith retires.

1923 A. O. Howell, Master.[10]

1928 Mr. A. O. Howell leaves as headmaster. He has started as a pupil at the school.[11]

1929 Prize-giving and welcome to Mr. Nicholls the new headmaster. Changes are pending.[12]

1930 Decision to close the school as too expensive to update under new education plan for the city.[13]

1931 The buildings and site offered for sale. Includes Schoolmaster's residence, classrooms, offices, grounds, gardens and shop with boardrooms over. About 41,056 superficial feet in area.[14]
