1876-9 A graving dock was constructed at Southampton

1900 The contract for the Trafalgar Dock was let to John Aird and Co, Mr. F. E. Wentworth Sheilds was resident engineer[1]

1904 The Trafalgar Graving Dock was completed

1931 The Southern Railway placed a contract with John Mowlem and Co to construct the world's largest graving dock at Millbrook, Southampton. Edward Nuttall and Co of Manchester would provide assistance to speed up the work in order to be ready in time for the new Cunard liner then under construction[2]
