1859 John Sutherland Valentine proposed a line from Vendas Novas to Evora and Beja in the province of "Alentejo". He obtained a concession for it from the Portuguese Government and a company was formed in London to construct it.
The contract was let to Mr. Edward Price under Mr Valentine's superintendence but he resigned soon afterwards.
