Smeatonian Society

From Graces Guide

c.1792 following the death of its founder, the Society of Civil Engineers was renamed the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers.

Eventually the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers became more of a dining club and a group of younger engineers began to demand a better grouping to aid their profession and formed the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1818.

1830 The Rules and Regulations issued that year bore the title "Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers" for the first time, which has been its title ever since.

1845 Recognising the role of the Institution of Civil Engineers as the home of the civil engineering profession, the Smeatonian Society gave its collections of plans and reports to the Institution.
