1980 With his brother, Basil, deputy chairman, lobbied the government to prevent the National Enterprise Board from selling the stake in Ferranti to a single bidder, but instead sell to institutions, perhaps as a phased sale, and preserve the family's 20 percent holding in the company[1]

1987 Reportedly opposed the merger of the company with International Signal and Control[2] which was subequently to bring the company down.
