1882 The Scottish Oriental Steamship Company Limited was incorporated.[1]

1899 The Norddeutscher Lloyd Steamship Company, of Bremen, bought the company's fleet of 14 steamers, with a total registered tonnage of 24,942, with the intention of carrying on the service between Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and Swatow.[2] Many of the company's ships had been built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co specially for service in Chinese waters.[3]
