It seems that Samuel ran a flour mill in Cork, as his later partner, John Buchholz, mentioned that he had designed and installed equipment there.[1]

1875 Patent for treating grain

1881 Samuel S. Allin 45, timber merchant, lived in Brentford with Sophia C. Allin 33, Lionel F. Allin 4, Violet A. Allin 2[4]

1885 Mr Sealey Allin, of Queen Victoria-street, London E.C., exhibited a patent balanced float water motor, with a claimed working efficiency of over 90 per cent.
