SAMUEL HERBERT BROOKS was the proprietor and latterly the chairman of the Union Ironworks, West Gorton, Manchester, for thirty-four years. He entered the works, which had been founded by his father, as an apprentice in 1878, and after serving for four years received a further course of practical training with Messrs. Samuel Walker and Company, Ltd., textile engineers, of Lille, France.
Returning to the iron works in 1885 he was appointed assistant manager and in the following year, on the death of his father, became sole proprietor. Mr. Brooks travelled extensively on the Continent and in America in the interests of his firm and under his direction the textile machinery-making business expanded considerably, with a personnel eventually of more than 2,500.
He had been a Member of the Institution for nearly fifty years, having been elected in 1897. His death occurred in Manchester on 16th December 1945, within a few days of completing his eighty-second year.
