Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co
Constructed by Alexander Stephen and Sons of Linthouse, Glasgow, in the short time of just under two years from the date the order was given. Her lines were the outcome of a number of investigations in the Experimental Tank at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington. The design of the smoking room was based on material taken from the Old Palace of Bromley-by-Bow (which had been removed to the South Kensington Museum)! The main turbine generators were made by BTH. The two three-phase turbo-alternators had a rated output of 9,000 kw. at 2,720 volts, when running at 2,690 rrpm, while their maximum output rating was 6,536 kw. at a speed of 3,110 rpm, producing 3,150V[1] [2] [3] [4]
