PROFESSOR ROGER WILLIAM HERCULES HAWKEN was born in Australia on the 12th May, 1878, and died at Brisbane, Queensland, on the 18th October, 1947.
He was educated at Newington College, Sydney, and at the University of Sydney, where he obtained the degrees of Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Arts.
In 1901 he entered the Public Works Department of New South Wales, and from 1905 to 1909 served with the Public Works Department of the Federated Malay States.
On returning to Australia he was appointed a Shire Engineer in New South Wales and held that position until 1912, when he became Lecturer in Civil Engineering and Surveying at the University of Queensland, where from 1919 until his death he was Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
He also conducted a private practice as a consulting engineer. He acted as Chairman of various Commissions and Boards, including the Cross-River Commission of the Brisbane City Council; the Board of Professional Engineers; the Board of Examiners for Local Authority Engineers; the Queensland State Committee of the Standards Association of Australia; and the recently formed State Committee of the National Association of Testing Authorities....[more]
