The Black Vein Colliery was opened in the early 1840s by John Russell of the Risca Iron and Coal Co

1891 The National Collieries in the Rhondda Valley were united with those of Abercarn and Risca under the title of United National Collieries

Mather and Platt supplied an 850 kW Zoelly turbine to the colliery.[1]
