His antecedants

John (1736-1812) and Mary nee Bright came to Sheffield in about 1759 and opened a grocer & flax dressing business in King Street. They had two sons

  • John who married Hannah Willott Taylor
  • Thomas who married Ann Girdler
    • Eliza born in 1822 & married in 1852 to Charles Lockwood of Greno House, Grenoside. She had nine children, including twins of whom one died at birth. She died on 19 June 1896 aged 74. She is found in the 1851 census with her parents but RTP not listed.

1841 Living in Sheffield (age 6) with his parents Thos Porter (age 50), Grocer and Ann Porter (age 45). Also siblings Eliza Porter (age 15), Edward Porter (age 15), Frances Porter (age 10), Arthur Porter (age 10) and Ann Porter (age 4) [1]

1851 His parents and siblings found in Sheffield but RTP is not listed with them [2]

1861 Living in Enfield (age 26 and born in Sheffield), Unmarried, ????. A visitor in the house of Henry and Ann Atkin who also have a daughter Marianne (age 21 and born in Sheffield) [3]

1861 Q4 Marriage of Richard Thomas Porter and Marianne Atkin in Edmonton district [4]

1871 Living at Boley Hill House, Rochester (age 36 and born at Sheffield), Manufacturing Engineer. With wife Mary Ann (age 31 and born in Sheffield) and children Edith A. (age 8 and born at Rochester), Lillian M. (age 6 and born at Rochester), Ellen (age 4 and born at Rochester), Ethel M. (age 7 months and born in Rochester) plus four servants. [5]

1881 Living at Raleigh, Fox Grove Road, Beckenham (age 46 and born at Sheffield), Manufacturing Engineer. With wife Mary Ann (age 41 and born in Sheffield) and children Lillian M. (age 16 and born at Rochester), Ellen (age 14 and born at Rochester), Ethel M. (age 10 and born in Rochester) and his Sister-in-Law Mary Studer (age 36 and born in Sheffield, Widow) plus four servants. [6]

1886 Death of his daughter Ethel Marian age 15. His address is given as Raleigh, Beckenham [8]

1891 Living at 26 Foxgrove Road, Beckenham (age 56 and born at Sheffield), Engine maker. With wife Marianne (age 51 and born at Sheffield) and children Lillian Mary (age 26) and Ellen (age 24) plus a visitor plus four servants [9]

1901 Living at 26 Foxgrove Road, Beckenham (age 66 and born at Sheffield), Steam Roller Manufacturer. Employer. With wife Marianne (age 51 and born at Sheffield) and children Edith (age 38) and Lillian M. (age 36) plus four servants [10]

1913 Q4. Death age 79 in Bromley area

1914 Will proven. Shown as Engineer and Chairman of Aveling and Porter [11]
