RICHARD DE AQUILA GROSVENOR, BARON STALBRIDGE of Stalbridge, died at his house at Sussex Square, on the 19th May, 1912, aged 75. The fourth son of the second Marquess of Westminster, and younger brother of the first Duke, he was born on the 28th January, 1837, and was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge.
Entering public life at an early age, Lord Richard Grosvenor was returned as Liberal member for Flintshire in 1861, and held that seat for many years without challenge. He was appointed Patronage Secretary to the Treasury and Chief Government Whip in 1880, and continued to discharge the duties of that office until 1885, shortly after which he was raised to the peerage as Baron Stalbridge.
When the Liberal Unionist organization was set up, he became an influential member, but did not take any active part in political affairs.
Lord Stalbridge’s long connection with the London and North Western Railway Company commenced in 1870, when he became a director, and ceased only a year before his death. He was elected Chairman of the Company in 1891, in succession to the late Sir Richard Moon.....(more)
