Visit of the Iron and Steel Institute to the Iron, Steel and Engineering Industries of Manchester and District

R. and J. Dempster Ltd., Newton Heath.

This old established firm manufactures all types of plant for the production of gas, has erected complete gasworks in many parts of the world, and has many specialities relating to the treatment of gases both on the gas and chemical side of the industry.

They were the first to exploit and establish the spirally guided gasholder, and in addition, construct the new waterless gasholder of the M.A.N. type, an example of which, to contain $ million cubic feet, can be seen at the Bradford Road Gas Works of the Manchester Corporation.

Two specially designed machines that cost upwards of £20,000 are used in the manufacture of these storage vessels. Other special machinery has been designed for the production of their many patented specialities as applied to spiral holders.

The telegraphic address of the firm "Scrubber" intimates that they specialise in providing plant to remove the impurities from illuminating and industrial gases. Almost every type of appliance for the extraction of by-products is here manufactured including the production of neutral sulphate, anhydrous ammonia, etc. Their plant for the recovery of benzole from coal gas has been in operation for upwards of so years along with the fractionating stills, etc., associated therewith.

Tar distilling apparatus is another section of their business embracing many modern improvements, together with the treatment of gas from coke ovens and blast furnaces. Their storage hoppers, together with steel and cast iron tanks of any shape and size, are in general use, while modern electric welding has more recently been applied to this class of work. Steel mains for distributing gas and other uses, are other products.

Castings of every description up to 5 tons in weight are made in their foundry from various metals as occasion demands. They employ an extensive technical staff and plant has been erected by their own skilled workmen in all parts of the world.
