R. K. Evans, CEng, FIMechE, began his industrial career in 1958 with the Research Department of British Railways, following 2 years' service with the Corps of Royal Engineers. He subsequently joined Foster Wheeler Ltd, responsible for the development of automated oil-fuel and of firing of large power-station steam generators; and in 1963 was appointed Project Manager for a major US aerospace contractor, playing a leading part in the design and installation of ground-support equipment for the Titan III and Saturn rockets that made possible the manned space-flight program.
On his return to this country in 1969, he was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Britain's largest monthly technical journal, Design Engineering; this position he still holds.
