Pullman's Palace Car Co





1859 George Mortimer Pullman remodeled two old day-coaches of the Chicago and Alton Railroad as sleeping coaches.
1863 He began building "Palace" cars, one of which was assigned to the Alton line and another to the Chicago and North Western Railroad.
The sleeping cars became popular and were bought by other companies.
1867 Pullman's Palace Car Co. was formed in the USA.
1870 Acquired the Detroit Car & Manufacturing Co.
Built up a trans-continental (USA) sleeping car service.
1877 A Pullman sleeping car service was introduced between Modane and Florence. The cars were constructed in Detroit, in sections, and erected at the Porta Susa Carriage Works of the Alta Italia Railway at Turin. The Pullman Company had concluded a contract to run cars over the Alta Italia and Meridionale Railways.[1]
1880 Albert Benton Pullman, a brother of George Mortimer Pullman, was a partner in the Palace Car Co.[2]
1891 Albert B. Pullman of Chicago filed a patent on a car door which he assigned to the A. B. Pullman Co
1899 In connection with the absorption of another concern, the capital was increased, and still further augmented in 1907.
1900 The corporate name was changed to The Pullman Company.
1906 The Pullman Railroad Co. was incorporated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Pullman's Palace Car Co.
1919 The company produced 50,000 phonograph cabinets for the Edison Phonograph Works.
1920-22 The company produced approximately 13,000 steel automobile bodies for the Packard Motor Car Co.
