Pollock (Manchester)

Makers of clay tobacco pipes.

Established by Edward Pollock in 1879, who had previously worked at Sameul McLardy's clay pipe factory in Swan Street. Edward Pollock was born in Leith on 27 July 1841.

Locations: Fir Street, off Oldham Road (1879-1884); 33 & 35 Gartside Street (1884-1896); 18 Kirk Street, off Every Street, Ancoats (renamed Hardman Street in 1965) (1896-1974); Stott Street (1974-1994).

Goad's Insurance Plan of 1886 shows the Gartside Street factory at the corner of Gartside and Hardman Street (N. side of Hardman, E. side of Gartside). The site was very small, and had two kilns in the back yard, of approx 8 and 11 ft diameter.
