1853 20 January: The Society was formed to raise the artistic and scientific status of photography through meetings, publications, and annual exhibitions. Roger Fenton was its first honorary secretary. A publication committee was appointed in February and the Journal of the Photographic Society began publication on 3 March. The first editor was Arthur Henfrey FRS.

1856 Roger Fenton retired as secretary of The Society; the offices of secretary and editor were then combined; the Rev J. R. Major held the post until June 1857

1857 William Crookes was appointed secretary and editor.

1859 Hugh Welch Diamond became secretary until December 1868

1869 John Spiller became secretary.

1880 William de W. Abney took over as secretary.

1894 Became the Royal Photographic Society
