Sir Percy Crosland Tempest (1861-1924) C.B.E., M.Inst.C.E.

1861 Born son of Charles Tempest, a solicitor of Leeds

Educated at Leeds Grammar Sch. and Leeds University.

Training: Borough Engineer's Office, Leeds, and L. and N.W. Railway, Leeds.

Articled to the Borough Engineer, Leeds, and to the Engineer, L. and N.W. Railway.

1895-9 Resident Engineer, South Eastern Railway

1899 P. C. Tempest became chief engineer of the newly-formed South Eastern and Chatham Railway

1907 P. C. Tempest's name appears as 'Engineer' (SE&CR) on a plaque on the bridge at Tunbridge Wells Station, completed in 1907.

1914 Chief Way and Works Engineer of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway

WWI When the War Department extended the Military Base at Boulogne in 1914, he carried out the necessary civil engineering works, which comprised laying down about 10 miles of sidings. He was agent to the Northern of France and Belgian State Railways. Purchased and inspected large quantities of rails, bridge work and other railway equipment.

1920 General Manager and Chief Engineer., S.E. and C. Railway.

by 1922 also Engineer to the Channel Tunnel Co.

1923 Percy Crosland Tempest, Sir William Forbes, Sir Herbert Walker were appointed joint general managers of the Southern Railway on grouping

1923 Knighted in the Birthday Honours List

1923 After Forbes retired in June, Tempest continued as joint general manager until the end of the year when he also retired.
