The SOUTH OF IRELAND was built by W. Simons and Co., Renfrew, in 1867. was a vessel 220.2 ft. by 25.8 ft. by 12.4 ft., with a tonnage of 274 and 475. She had two oscillating cylinders 50 in. by 48 in., steam pressure 30 lb. In 1872 she was re-boilered. She was transferred to the Weymouth-Cherbourg service when inaugurated on 1st August, 1878. On ,a run home from Cherbourg on Christmas morning of 1883, the SOUTH OF IRELAND was wrecked in Warbarrow Bay, off the Dorsetshire coast.
