The Blackwall Railway Co had a “freak” vessel, iron-built at Blackwall by Ditchburn and Mare. She was of 30 N.H.P. propelled in an entirely novel way. The vessel was designed especially for trade on the river, and the paddles consisted of single blades of iron dipping almost perpendicularly into the water and being forced backwards by an iron arm, making her action like a grasshopper. This novel gear drove the vessel at about 10 knots, and had the advantage that it created no wash, and therefore did no damage to passing vessels. The vessel was named PROPELLER
