1899 The last paddle ship to be built for British channel service was "Mabel Grace," constructed by Laird Brothers for the newly amalgamated South Eastern and Chatham Railway Company's Folkestone-Boulogne service. She had three-cylinder compound engines developing 5500 I.H.P. which gave her a speed of 20 knots.[1]
