‘Cross-Channel and Coastal Paddle Steamers’ by George Frank Burtt
In 1892 there was a service from Whitehaven to Ramsey and the author well remembers a rough trip between these ports in a paddle steamer named the HERALD. She was an old boat built by Caird & Co. at Greenock in 1866. This was probably the boat belonging to a firm that instituted a weekly service between Whitehaven and Ramsey in 1856. The HERALD was owned by J. Little and Co. of Barrow, and was of iron, 221.6 feet long, 22 feet beam and 10.4 feet deep, 446 gross tonnage, and of 150 n.h.p.
