‘Cross-Channel and Coastal Paddle Steamers’ by George Frank Burtt
The following year (1874) a more up-to-date paddle steamer was purchased from Laird’s. This vessel was 253.7 feet long, 29.4 feet beam, 14.7 feet deep, tonnage 859 gross and 432 net, and was named EARL SPENCER. The engines were of the diagonal oscillating direct acting type of 350 h.p. and capable of 13.5 knots. The cylinders were 64 inches by 72 inches stroke, and the working pressure 21 lb. per square inch.
The EARL SPENCER was withdrawn in February, 1896.
