In 1845 was launched the Company’s first iron steamer, by Robert Napier, named the BEN-MY-CHREE, of which the translation is "Woman of my Heart.” As previously stated, her engines were taken from the QUEEN OF THE ISLE.
The BEN-MY-CHREE was a clipper bowed steamer, 165 feet long and of 399 gross tonnage. In i860, she was sold out of the Company and, seventy years later, was lying a hulk at Bonny River, West Africa.
