P. D. Swales, BSc PhD Member, graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds in 1955.

After a brief spell in the RAF, he joined ICI and later moved to the R&D Division of Head Wrightson.

In 1964, he was appointed a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds and gained a PhD in 1969 for work on the lubrication of rubber. Apart from hydrofoils, his other current research is concerned with artificial heart valves. He has also spent some time as a visiting assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
