North Eastern Salt Co
North Eastern Salt Company Limited. Salt merchants, owned by four local salt manufacturers.
1898 North Eastern Salt Company Limited registered with capital of £10,200. Company No 58,633. Object “to carry on the salt trade in the Middlesbrough and South Durham district”.[1] Note, the company records are held in the National Archives, Kew, Ref BT 31/31649/58633.
Directors (each representing one of the participating companies) were:-
• Richard Grigg – Salt Union, Middlesbrough district – to be chairman and general manager
• Walter William Storr - Cleveland Salt Company
• John Wilson Watson – Tees Salt Company
• Ralph Walker – Hartlepools Salt and Brine Company (owners of the Greatham Salt Works)
• Arthur Whipham – Owners of Middlesbrough Estate Limited (owners of Middlesbrough Salt Works)
1904 Richard Grigg resigned. His successor at Salt Union, Albert Edward Ward, became general manager and secretary.
1909 J W Watson died. He was succeeded by his son Arthur James Watson.
1913 Shared offices with the Salt Union at Erimus Chambers, Queen's Square, Middlesbrough.[2]
1924 A J Watson died.
Directors in 1927 included (but may not have been limited to)[3]:-
• Walter William Storr – Chairman (Cleveland Salt Co)
• George Henry Cox (Salt Union)
• James William McRobert (Cerebos)
The company was wound up voluntarily in 1930.[4]
