A thriving society discovering much about the rich industrial history and archaeology of the broader Chesterfield and north-east Derbyshire area. They have monthly meetings with talks on local heritage Members receive quarterly Newsletters full of details about “What’s On”. They visit local and not-so-local sites of interest, and carry out surveys and limited excavation within the area.

The Society was formed in 2000; its aims and objectives are the study of the industrial history and archaeology of broadly the north-east corner of Derbyshire, an area with a very long and strong heritage of manufacturing industry, from paper products and ceramics through to heavy engineering. It is an area where waterpower and coal provided the energy, and where turnpike roads, canals and railways were developed to aid distribution.

NEDIAS brings together like-minded individuals who have an interest in the subject at whatever level, from the curious, to those who already have extensive knowledge. New members are always welcome, and further details can be obtained via cliff@nedias.co.uk The Society has a number of activities. It has regular, usually monthly, lecture meetings, inviting speakers to present on a variety of industrial history and industrial archaeology topics. Whilst the majority have distinct local interest, many take in a wider perspective. The group wherever possible organises or takes part in survey and review activities of industrial heritage of the local area, some in conjunction with other heritage groups.

During the summer months particularly, visits to local and not-so-local industrial heritage sites are organised. In addition, NEDIAS has published since inception a regular quarterly Newsletter, designed to carry details of meetings, local industrial history news, and shorter articles; the NEDIAS Journal is designed to complement the NEDIAS Newsletter, offering scope for more detailed and in-depth papers.
