Ministry of Housing and Local Government
1951 January: The Local Government and public health divisions of the Ministry of Health were moved to the Ministry of Town and Country Planning; the Ministry was re-named the Ministry of Local Government and Planning
1951 November: the Ministry of Local Government and Planning was renamed Ministry of Housing and Local Government
1956 Civil defence functions of the Ministry of Health were transferred to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
1967 some of the duties of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food passed to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
1970 It was recognised that the Ministry of Public Building and Works and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government had parallel (and in some respects overlapping) interests. This led to the setting up in November of the Department of the Environment, which absorbed them both, together with the Ministry of Transport.
