1851 James Mellard. Employing 35 men, 13 Apprentices and others.[1]

1860 Listed also of Uttoxeter, Staffs., ironmongers and implement makers

1861 James Mellard. Employing 86 men, 26 boys.[2]

1864 Acquires the Albion Foundry, formerly that of Thomas Hatfield. Advertises as both Trent Foundry and Albion Foundry, Rugeley.[3]

1869 Ralph Mellard operated at the Trent Ironworks, Rugeley. The firm carried out several contracts for ironwork, and did a large trade in agricultural implements and machinery.

The business was incorporated as a company, under the title of Southwell and Co.; Frederick Charles Southwell became managing partner.
