1818 January. Death. 'On the 1st inst. at Laneside, in Hopwood, aged 60, Mr. Matthew Leadbeatter, Civil Engineer for the Rochdale Canal; whose ability, fidelity, and zeal in the discharge of his duty secured to him the entire confidence and esteem of his employers; he was eminently qualified for the duties of his office, his attainments the higher branches of the mathematics and a thorough practical knowledge masonry; and the experience of thirty-one years had furnished him with such local knowledge of that canal will render his loss irreparable.'[1]
