1909 Obituary [1]
THOMAS MATTHEW CORBY was born at Redruth, Cornwall, on 4th January 1847.
He served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Carno, general engineers, of that town, and on its completion he entered the shops of Messrs. Tangye, Cornwall Works, Birmingham.
In the following year he proceeded to their Paris house as superintending engineer, in which position he was responsible for the instalment of the firm's engines, pumping and other machinery in France.
After four years' residence there, he returned to England for a further short period in the Cornwall Works, and then he was appointed to take charge of the firm's show rooms and offices in Birmingham.
In 1876 he opened the Manchester branch of Messrs. Tangye's business, and represented the firm in that district until 1891, when he severed his connection to join Messrs. Thomas Firth and Sons, of Norfolk Works, Sheffield, as their representative in Birmingham and district. He also travelled extensively in Northern Europe on their behalf.
His death took place suddenly at his residence in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on 7th April 1909, at the age of sixty-two.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1895.
