Mattel Inc, US company which is one of the world's largest toy producers.

1945 The business was founded in a garage workshop in Southern California by Ruth and Elliot Handler and Harold "Matt" Matson to make picture frames.

Elliot developed a sideline in making dolls-house furniture from frame scraps.

Matson sold out to his partner, who then began to make toys.

1959 Mattel first produced the Barbie Doll.

1960 The company became public.

1961 Ken joined Barbie.

c.1966 Acquired Rosebud Dolls[1]

1975 The Handlers, founders of the original business, left the company.

Mattel is now a worldwide conglomerate with 25,000 employees.
