1984 Martin’s Retail Group was formed when Guinness took over Martin the Newsagent, and the four chains in the group — Martin’s, Lavells, Lewis Meeson and R. S. McColl — have about 1,700 outlets, of which 1,100 sell books.[1]

1987 Guinness sold its retail businesses.

1988 The new owners (of Martin Retail Group) have moved rapidly, and in mid-February are expected to reveal their plans to redesign many of the shops and give them the name Martin McColl.[2]

1995 Martin Retail Group Plc has over 770 branches, trading as Martin the Newsagents in England/Wales and as R. S. McColl in Scotland.[3]
