1877 Description of new mill.Boilers by J. C. Stephenson and Son, of Preston, 27ft. by 7ft 90 psi. Engines: Clayton, Goodfellow, and Co., of Blackburn. Horizontal compound, high pressure cylinder 29in., low pressure 48in. diameter, 5ft. 6in. stroke, 40 rpm, 'and they can beworked, as we understand, with great economy to indicated 500 horse-power. The spiral segment wheel weighs near thirty tons, and attached to the governor is a patent “knock off motion,” which proves a valuable regulator. .... The mill gearing and shafting, we should state, has been laid by Mr. Joseph Clayton, of Preston; the intermediate and jack frames are Messrs. Howard and Bullough, Accrington; scutchers and carding engines by Messrs. Platt Bros, and Co., Limited, of Oldham; and tho whole of the mules are by Messrs. Dobson and Barlow, of Bolton. ....'
