Leicester station was opened in 1840 by the Midland Counties Railway, and rebuilt in 1894 and 1978.

The architect for the earlier Campbell Street station was William Flint

The Midland Railway completely rebuilt the station between 1892 and 1894 to a design by the architect Charles Trubshaw.
