THE LANCASHIRE STEEL CORPORATION LIMITED was incorporated in 1930 to acquire the iron and steel assets of the following companies:-
The Corporation owns the entire share capital of Rylands Brothers and the Whitecross Co, both large manufacturers of steel wire, as well as of the Pearson and Knowles Engineering Co, structural and general engineers.
The coal assets of the Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., and the Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd. as well as those of the Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd. and the Wigan Junction Colliery Co. Ltd., were transferred to the Wigan Coal Corporation Ltd., in which the Lancashire Steel Corporation Ltd. is largely interested.
Irlam Works. WHARF.
The wharf, on the Manchester Ship Canal, which can accommodate the largest vessels using this waterway, forms an integral part of the combined works at Irlam, where the coke ovens, blast furnaces, open-hearth shop, rolling mills and finishing departments are arranged on one site for the purpose of manufacturing the finished products at a minimum cost. The handling of the raw materials has been designed to reduce transport to a minimum, and has an important influence on the cost at which steel can be produced.
The ore unloading and raw materials handling plant, which has no counterpart in Great Britain, deals with both land and sea-borne supplies, eliminating hand labour beyond that required
