In 1978 Peter Mitchell was awarded the Nobel Prize for his contribution to the understanding of biological energy transfer through the formulation of the chemiosmotic theory. 'His mother was a shy and gentle person of very independent thought and action, with strong artistic perceptiveness'.[1]
