1873 Died. '...The deceased was born in Castle-Northwich, in January, 1807, of respectable parentage, but had the misfortune to lose his father when but eight years of age. In early life he was connected with the river Weaver as a flatowner and carrier, and was the pioneer of his class to enter the salt trade, which he carried so successfully as to leave his firm - Joseph Verdin and Sons - the largest salt manufacturers in the kingdom, their works manufacturing about three hundred thousand tons of salt per annum, and consuming nearly one hundred an fifty thousand tons of fuel in the year....'[1]
