Joseph Howard (Manchester)

From Graces Guide

Extract from an article in the American Machinist, 1904 [1]:-

At one time Joseph Howard was employed as a patent office draughtsman in Manchester, which brought him into close contact with the likes of Richard Roberts, Joseph Whitworth, William Fairbairn, James Nasmyth, etc. One of his prized possessions was a set of drawing instruments once owned by John George Bodmer.

He was later employed as manager at the Manchester engineering works of Butterworth, and while there he received a box from Otto containing one of the original Otto gas engines, with a view to the manufacture of the engines under licence in England. He returned the case unopened! Eventually Crossley Brothers took up its manufacture in the UK.
