From Graces Guide

Brewer of Manchester

1813 Joseph Holt was born in Unsworth, a village north of Manchester.

Attracted by the big city, Joseph became a carter at Harrison's Strangeways Brewery.

1849, he married 40 year old Catherine Parry. By all accounts Catherine had a good business brain and she mortgaged property to finance a small brewery behind a pub in Oak Street in the centre of Manchester.

1855 The Holts moved to the Ducie Bridge Brewery with a 12-barrel 'pan'.

1860 bought the current site in what is now Empire Street and built a brand new brewery.

1882 Joseph Holt handed over to his son Edward after establishing a chain of 20 houses.

1890 Edward was involved in local politics; elected Lord Mayor in 1908.

1928 Edward died; the company was passed to his son, also Edward.

Remained in the family ever since.
