c.1812 John Common (1778-1868) passed the pattern for a reaping machine to Thomas and his son Joseph.

1822 With his father, Joseph constructed a model of a reaping machine invented by Henry Ogle; they added an apparatus for collecting the corn into sheaves.

1824 Thomas and Joseph emigrated to the USA
