1883 Professor Warren Johnson invented the electric room thermostat.
1885 Johnson formed Johnson Electric Service Company, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
1895 The company built its first tower clock for the Minneapolis courthouse.
1902 Renamed Johnson Service Company.
1912 sale of other operations to concentrate on the controls business.
1940 Johnson Service public listing.
1956 Started to build and instal pneumatic control centres.
1972 Introduced the JC/80, the first minicomputer system to manage building controls.
1974 name changed to Johnson Controls, Inc.
1978 Merged with Globe-Union Inc., the largest maker of automotive batteries in USA.
1985 two major acquisitions: Hoover Universal, Inc., a major supplier of seating and plastic parts for automobiles and a new entrant in the plastic-container industry; and Ferro Manufacturing Corporation, supplier of automotive seating components and mechanisms.
1989 Acquired Pan Am World Services, Inc., provider of facility management services for military bases, airports, and space centres.
1995 Johnson acquired Roth Frères SA, a French supplier of automotive seating and interior systems.
1996 acquired Prince Automotive, supplier of automotive interior systems and components.
1997 the plastic container division was sold to a unit of Viag Group AG.
1998 Acquired Becker Group, Inc., a supplier of interior systems in both North America and Europe.
2001 Acquired automotive electronics supplier Sagem SA.
2002 Purchases the automotive battery business of Varta AG.
