John Williamson

John Williamson (c1824-1916) of the Cannock and Rugeley Collieries.

Invented a form of miner's safety lamp.

1877 Williamson's Lamp was first used in the collieries. [1]

1900 John Williamson, The Hills, Cannock. Presentation to him after working for the colliery for 32 years. His son Major R. S. Williamson took over.[2]

1916 Died. 'The death took place Rhos-on-Sea on Saturday of Mr. John Williamson, J.P., The Hills, Cannock, a well known mining engineer, at the age of ninety-two. A member of a North Country family, Mr. Williamson started work in the pits, and early in life came to the Cannock Chase district, and for upwards of half a century occupied a prominent position in connection with the Cannock and Rugeley Colliery Company, first as manager and then as general manager, and he held the latter position upwards of twenty years, being succeeded in that capacity a few years ago by his son Colonel R. S. Williamson. On two or three occasions the Government have availed themselves of the services of Mr. Williamson on Royal Commissions, and connection with these he visited Russia, Canada, and America. Mr. Williamson was also associated with the public life of the Cannock district...'[3]
