"JOHN THOMPSON MERTENS was associated with electrical engineering throughout his career. He was born in 1877, and received his technical education in electrical and mechanical engineering at Brighton Technical College.

After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Crompton and Company, Ltd., electrical engineers, of London and Chelmsford, from 1893 to 1896, he was assistant engineer, Chelmsford Electric Lighting Co, 1900-3, and assistant engineer to the Hove Electric Lighting Co, 1903-8. He went to India in 1909 and began a connection with the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, Ltd., which was only terminated by his death on 18th February 1949.

After serving as assistant engineer for four years he was made deputy agent (engineering) and promoted to the post of agent and chief engineer seven years later. He relinquished this appointment in 1928 but maintained his association with the Corporation to the close of his career as consultant. Mr. Mertens had been a Member of the Institution since 1912."
