JOHN SAMUEL HAYWOOD was associated with gas engineering throughout his professional career. He received his practical training in the laboratories of the City of Birmingham's Gas Department, in whose service he continued until his untimely death, which occurred on 6th August 1944, at the age of 43. During this period he was chiefly concerned with research, being especially interested in electrical testing in relation to its application to pyrometry, and in addition was engaged on outside inspection.

Mr. Haywood was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1931.
