JOHN RYMER-JONES died at Blackheath on the 15th November, 1928, at the age of 77.
Born in 1851, the studied physics and chemistry at King's College, London, where his father was professor of comparative anatomy.
At an early age he joined the electrical department of the British Telegraph Manufactory, where he worked under the late Sir Charles Wheatstone and Mr. Robert Sabine, and took part in cable-laying expeditions.
In 1873 he was appointed electrician to the Imperial Government Telegraphs of Japan, which post he retained until 1876, when he returned to London and was for several years engaged in cable-testing work.
He then joined the India Rubber, Gutta Percha and Telegraph Works Co., and took part in the laying of a cable between Marseilles and Algiers. During a long period of service with this company as chief electrician in the submarine telegraph department he introduced many improvements in connection with the testing, laying and repair of submarine cables.
He joined the Institution as an Associate in 1872, and was elected a Member in 1888.
